Papa Bois: The Father of the Forest

Meet Papa Bois! This short, muscular old man with small horns sticking out of his head and a beard made of leaves is the Father of the Woods and the keeper of the forest. He protects everything in the forest, including all flora and fauna.

Papa Bois is a shapeshifter and can appear in many different forms, but he usually appears as an old man. Those who have seen him say his body is covered with hair and that his legs are hooves. Although Papa Bois appears very old, many believe he can run faster than a deer. He usually carries a hollowed-out cow’s horn, which he blows to warn animals when there is danger nearby.

He seems magical, right? There is a dark side to Papa Bois. It is believed that he sometimes leads hunters deep into the forest until they get lost. You can’t say I didn’t warn you! Be polite to Papa Bois and, whatever you do, don’t stare at his hooves!

He also goes by the names Maitre Bois (Master of the Woods) and Daddy Bouchon (Hairy Man) in Grenada, St. Lucia, and Trinidad.
